Roundtable 5

Challenges of an Ageing Population: Workforce Management

Time:   2.30 pm - 4.00 pm    Tuesday 27 April 2010
Location: North Congressional Meeting Room, US Capitol Visitor Center
Subjects

Ageing populations in Europe and other parts of the world will not facilitate innovations, some of the linked issues are:

  • Should migration be resisted or is it a factor that could be favourable to growth as it was before WW1?
  • Will the evolving demographic profile of countries change their economic and political prospects in the global order ?
  • Will present western welfare and retirement schemes survive the financial and fiscal tensions created by an ageing population? Can effective reform be expected in a foreseeable future?
  • Do costly anti-immigration policies work at cross purposes with the need to attract highly skilled labour? What should be done by the EU and US to attract such labour?
  • What will be the effect of the EU and US attracting skilled labour form third countries on the development of those countries?
